Gooseberries

Gooseberries are another old homestead favorite that deserves a comeback. Tart, a little tangy, and absolutely wonderful, cooked down into jam or a homemade pie. The bushes are hardy and low-maintenance once established, tolerating cooler climates and less-than-perfect soil better than a lot of other fruit. They do have thorny canes to watch out for at harvest time, but a bucket of fresh gooseberries makes the scratches worth it.
