Question 1

What temperature do you bake whole butternut squash at?

Accepted Answer

This recipe bakes at 350°F for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the squash is fork-tender.

Question 2

Can you roast a whole butternut squash without cutting it into pieces first?

Accepted Answer

This recipe is called "whole roasted" or "halved" squash because it bakes in two halves rather than being peeled and cut into cubes, it isn't left completely uncut. You just slice the squash in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds, no peeling and hardly any cutting required. That's what makes this method so much easier than a cubed squash recipe.

Question 3

How do you know when the squash is done?

Accepted Answer

You should be able to easily poke a knife or fork through the thickest part of the squash without resistance.

Question 4

Can I make this ahead of time?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can roast the squash a day or two ahead and store it in the fridge, then reheat it using the instructions in the Storage And Reheating section above.

Question 5

What other seasonings can I use besides brown sugar?

Accepted Answer

Cinnamon, nutmeg, or a drizzle of maple syrup all pair well with the butter and brown sugar. See the Ingredient Notes above for more.
