To Make Powdered Laundry Soap
Grate a bar of soap using a cheese grater or pulse in a food processor until finely shredded.
In a large bowl mix 2 cups of borax, 2 cups of washing soda, and the grated soap.
Pour into an airtight container for storage, a plastic container with a snap-on lid or mason jar work well.
To Make Liquid Laundry Soap
Shred the bar soap using a cheese grater or food processor.
Place the grated soap in a pot with 8 cups of water and melt over low-medium heat. Stir the mixture constantly until the soap is completely dissolved, about 10 minutes.
Pour the borax and soda into a 5 gal bucket, add hot water and stir until the powders have completely dissolved.
Add the melted soap mixture, stir and fill up the bucket the rest of the way with 4-5 gallons of hot water. Stir until everything is well combined.
Cover with a secure lid and let it sit overnight.
The next day it will look like a clumpy gel. Leave it as is or stir the laundry soap until it’s smooth using a long-handled spoon or immersion blender.
Pour into gallon jugs or other containers. If you want to save space just refill an old laundry detergent container from the bucket as needed.
