Apple & Pear Picking Fun

This morning we decided that we would head out to a fruit farm to do some apple and pear picking.

I found this place earlier in the summer but it seemed like every time I tried to get out there something else would come up. Today things just worked out right and we headed out.

After we got there we found out that it was their last day open for picking!  I’ve very glad we made it over, we had a great time!

We picked a bushel of Empire apples first.  I was really impressed with how many apples their trees still had on them.  After that, we headed to the back of the farm where the pear trees were.

This is one of the pear trees. We had a little more trouble finding pears on the trees, but as we went further back on the farm there was a lot more.

I think these ones were Anjou pears.  I hope to get there earlier in the season next year to get Bartlett too.

After the Empire apples and pears were picked we headed to the other side of the farm and picked a bushel of  Ida Red apples, yum!  They glow like red rubies, just beautiful.

By that time it was starting to get cooler.  We headed back to the shop on the farm to buy a few bushels that were already picked. These were ones that were not available to pick your own anymore.

We were going to get a bushel of Spy apples and then we found out that they had seconds available for $10 a bushel less than the firsts. They just had small bruises and looked to be in good shape.  So we bought 2 of the seconds of Spy’s.

I was so glad, we ended up with twice as many apples as I had planned for less money.

Before leaving we also picked up some apple cider and Russet apples that are a favourite and so hard to find!  I’ll be canning chunky applesauce and dehydrating apples and pears all week!
