To start your crochet chain, start with a slip knot around the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook once and pull it back through the slip knot. That new loop is your first chain, the slip knot does not count as a stitch! Continue wrapping the yarn once and pulling through the loop on the hook until your chain is the length you need.
