Some days my kids just can’t sit still, can you relate? Fall seems to make it even harder. There’s so much going on outside, and they’d rather be playing in leaves than sitting at the table. A worksheet can start to feel like a chore.

But hide some fall word cards around the house, and suddenly it’s a game! That’s why I made this fall activity. Kids get to move around, and they’re still reading and writing the whole time. Plus, it’s simple enough to pull out on a busy fall morning with very little prep.

Why You’ll Love This Fall Write The Room

  • Kids get to move while they learn. Walking around to “hunt” for words is great for wiggly kids who need a break from sitting.
  • It’s low prep. Print the cards and a recording page, cut the cards apart, and you’re ready to go.
  • It works for different ages and abilities. Picture cues help beginning readers, and the numbered pages give older kids more of a challenge. It’s perfect when you’re homeschooling more than one child.
  • You can use it again and again. With color and black and white versions, it’s easy to print, color, and pull out every fall.

How To Do The Fall Write The Room Activity

Fall write the room worksheet with picture matching spaces beside vocabulary cards for apple, acorn, and sunflower, arranged with colorful pencils and gingham paper.

Print The Cards And Recording Pages

Print the fall word cards in color or black and white. Then pick the recording page that fits your child. If you’re using the black and white cards, let your kids color them first. It’s a fun warm-up before the hunt.

Cut Out The Word Cards

Cut the 12 cards apart. If you want them to last for years, print them on cardstock or laminate them.

Hide The Cards Around The Room

Tape the cards around your room or house. At home, try doors, windows, and the fridge. In a classroom or daycare, spread them around the walls at kids’ eye level.

Go On A Fall Word Hunt

Give your child a recording page, a pencil, and a clipboard. Then send them off to find the cards. When they find a card, they write the word in the matching spot on their page. Picture cue pages show them where each word goes. Numbered pages match the number on each card.

Check The Answers

When all 12 words are found, use the answer key to check their work together. Older kids can even check their own page. Then celebrate their success finding all the fall words.

Skills Kids Can Practice

This fall write the room activity builds lots of early literacy skills:

  • Fall vocabulary
  • Word recognition
  • Handwriting practice
  • Letter formation and copying words
  • Beginning sounds and phonics
  • Matching pictures and numbers
  • Following directions
  • Gross motor skills, from walking, bending, and reaching

Ways To Use This Fall Literacy Activity

There are so many ways to fit this printable into your fall days:

  • In your homeschool. Add it to a fall unit study, your morning basket, or a fun Friday activity.
  • As a movement break. Pull it out when kids need to get the wiggles out, but you still want some learning time.
  • Outside on a nice fall day. Tape the cards to trees, the porch, or the fence for an outdoor word hunt.
  • At daycare or preschool. Use it in small groups, and help little ones copy the words or find the pictures.
  • In a literacy center. Set it out as a fall literacy center or word work station.
  • For morning tubs or early finishers. It’s an easy activity kids can do on their own once they know how it works.
  • On a fall word wall. After the hunt, hang the cards on a word wall so kids can use the words in their own writing.
  • For harvest or Thanksgiving themes. Words like corn, hay, apple, and pumpkin fit right into a harvest week.

Tips For Success

  • Start with picture cues for younger kids. The picture cue pages help Pre-K kids and beginning readers feel successful. Move to the numbered pages when they’re ready.
  • Pick the writing style that fits. Primary handwriting lines are great for kids working on letter size. Blank boxes give kids more freedom.
  • Use clipboards. Writing while standing is much easier with a clipboard. Kids also love pretending to be detectives!
  • Hide the cards in plain sight. For little ones, keep the cards easy to spot. For older kids, make it a little trickier.
  • Do a few cards at a time. If 12 words is a lot for your child, hang 6 cards one day and 6 the next.
  • Laminate for next year. Laminated cards hold up well, so you can use them again every fall.
