Apple season is one of my favorite times of year to learn with little ones. We love to go apple picking at a local orchard, bake an apple pie, and read stories about Johnny Appleseed. Kids are already excited about apples, so it’s the perfect time to sneak in some reading and writing.

This write the room activity lets them get up and move while they learn. Instead of sitting at the table, they’re walking around the house hunting for words. It’s like a fun scavenger hunt, and it only takes a few minutes to set up.

Johnny Appleseed was a real person. His name was John Chapman, and he was born on September 26, 1774, in Massachusetts. He traveled across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario, planting apple trees and starting apple nurseries.

Today, lots of families and classrooms celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day on September 26. Some celebrate in March instead to go with the spring planting season. Either way, it’s a fun excuse to learn about apples!

Print The Cards And Recording Pages

Print the word cards in color or black and white. Then pick the recording page that fits your child’s needs. If you’re using the black and white cards, let your kids color them first. It’s a fun warm-up before the hunt.

Cut Out The Word Cards

Next, cut the 12 cards apart. If you want them to last for years, print them on cardstock or laminate them.

Hide The Cards Around The Room

Tape the cards around your room or house. At home, try doors, windows, and the fridge. In a classroom or daycare, spread them around the walls at kids’ eye level.

Go On An Apple Word Hunt

Give your child a recording page, a pencil, and a clipboard. Then send them off to find the cards. When they find a card, they write the word in the matching spot on their page.

Picture cue pages show them where each word goes. Numbered pages match the number on each card.

Check The Answers

When all 12 words are found, use the answer key to check their work together. Older kids can even check their own page. Then celebrate finding all the apple words.

  • Word recognition
  • Reading longer and two-word phrases
  • Handwriting practice
  • Letter formation and copying words
  • Beginning sounds and phonics
  • Matching pictures and numbers
  • Following directions
  • Gross motor skills, including walking, bending, and reaching

There are so many ways to fit this printable into your apple season:

  • In your homeschool. Add it to an apple unit study, your morning basket, or a fun Friday activity.
  • On Johnny Appleseed Day. Pair it with a Johnny Appleseed book and a craft for a simple celebration.
  • After apple picking. Talk about the bushels, trees, and apple treats you saw, then go on a word hunt at home.
  • As a movement break. Pull it out when kids need to get the wiggles out, but you still want some learning time.
  • At daycare or preschool. Use it in small groups, and help little ones copy the words or find the pictures.
  • In a literacy center. Set it out as an apple or fall literacy center or word work station.
  • For morning tubs or early finishers. It’s an easy activity kids can do on their own once they know how it works.
  • On a word wall. After the hunt, hang the cards on an apple word wall so kids can use the words in their own writing.

Tips For Success

  • Start with picture cues for younger kids. The picture cue pages help Pre-K kids and beginning readers feel successful. Move to the numbered pages when they’re ready.
  • Point out the “apple” words. Before the hunt, show kids that some words start the same way. Then they’ll know to look at the whole word.
  • Pick the writing style that fits. Primary handwriting lines are great for kids working on letter size. Blank boxes give kids more freedom.
  • Use clipboards. Writing while standing is much easier with a clipboard. Kids also love pretending to be word detectives!
  • Do a few cards at a time. If 12 words is a lot for your child, hang 6 cards one day and 6 the next.
  • Laminate for next year. Laminated cards hold up well, so you can use them again every apple season.
