Beat the heat with dandelion iced tea! This simple, tasty drink is perfect for summer and super easy to make at home.
Dandelions are often thought of as a pesky weed but they really are a tasty herb and an edible flower in the early growing season.
I love to pick lots of their yellow flowers from our yard and garden and enjoy treats like dandelion jelly and dandelion syrup and other dandelion recipes. But another favorite is this easy dandelion flower iced tea, it’s one of my favorite herbal teas.
It’s so easy to make, too. All you need is some boiling water, tea bags, dandelion flowers, sugar, and a little pinch of baking soda.
This recipe makes a large batch, 1 gallon of dandelion tea, perfect for enjoying on hot summer days or at your backyard BBQ.
Ingredient Notes
With just a few ingredients, this recipe is quick and easy to make. See the recipe card for the full measurements.
Tea – You can use your favorite tea for this recipe, I often use decaf orange pekoe tea but green tea is also a great choice.
Dandelion flowers – You’ll need about 2 cups of flowers. You can use more if you want a stronger dandelion flavor.
Sugar – White sugar turns this into a sweet tea and helps to bring out the flavor of the dandelions. You can adjust the amount of sugar to suit your tastes.
Baking soda – Baking soda helps to keep your iced tea from having a bitter aftertaste and keeps the tea clearer. It just takes a pinch of baking soda to make a big difference to your tea.
How To Make Dandelion Iced Tea
You’ll need about 2 cups of dandelion flowers. Make sure to pick them from a clean place that hasn’t been sprayed with chemicals such as weed killers or pesticides or had pets or animals.
After picking rinse the dandelion flowers under cool water to remove any dirt and little bugs that could be hiding in the flowers.
Pour 8 cups of water and your sugar into a large saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Remove the pot from the heat and add the tea bags, dandelion flowers, and baking soda to the hot water. Place a lid on the pot and let the tea steep for 15 minutes.
Then remove the flowers and tea bags and pour the tea into a heat proof half gallon container. Add 8 cups of cold water and give it a good stir. Place your iced tea into the fridge until it’s chilled and you are ready to serve.
Do I Need To Remove The Yellow Petals?
No, you can use the whole dandelion flower without removing the green parts from the yellow petals. Often when I cook with dandelion flowers I pull the petals off because the green part of the flower can cause bitterness.
But I haven’t had a problem with that when making iced tea. If you prefer you certainly can remove the flower petals you can also freeze the dandelion flowers to use later.
Can I use Honey Instead Of Sugar?
Yes, you can use honey or raw honey instead of sugar in your iced tea. Just remember honey tastes sweeter so use a little less.
