DIY Log Advent Table Centerpiece

Making an Advent wreath has been on my to-do list for a long time. This year I had really planned on doing it, but when a neighbor gifted us a load of firewood and it had some birch logs I knew what I wanted to do this year!

I really wanted to make a natural-looking log candle holder for our kitchen table.

Hubby was excited to help out with this project because he also loves natural decorations. This is a really quick and easy Christmas project if you would like to give it a try.

One thing I was a little worried about was that logs are round. I could just picture our kids banging into the table and sending the log and candles flying.

Ummm NOPE! We had to make this safe from kids and pets.

I knew we could cut one side of the log so that it was flat, but I really wanted to leave it round.

Hubby quickly came up with an idea for adjustable “legs” on the log. He put 2 screws under each end!

This worked really well the log won’t tip over and because it’s raised if I want to I can put a little tray under it to catch the wax drippings.

Next, we measured how far apart we wanted the candles to sit. Then drilled the holes using a 3/4” drill bit, we made the holes about 1 1/4” deep.

After drilling the holes if you’re using birch use a knife to cut the bark edges around the opening. If you try and pull off the ragged ends without cutting them you’ll be pulling long strips of bark off.

Next set your log on the table where you would like it and set the candles inside. If you find they are a bit lose you could melt a little wax into the hole to help hold them securely.

Then decorate around the log with pine greenery.  We found some pine branches that had fallen from the huge trees next to us.

Cut little bits off of them and tucked them around the log.  We wanted to add some bright colors so took some berries off the Christmas flower arrangements I keep for crafts and tucked them around.

Now we have a beautiful table centerpiece for Christmas made out of treasures found around our little homestead!
