Looking for a dessert with the perfect balance of sweet and tart? You’ll love this easy apple cranberry crisp. Loaded with juicy apples and tangy cranberries with a buttery oat crumble topping, it’s warm, cozy, and full of classic holiday flavor.
One of my favorite fall desserts is apple crisp. But I wanted to change up the flavors and use up some leftover cranberries from Thanksgiving. I tell you, adding these two flavors together is my new favorite dessert recipe.
Whether you’re baking for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or just want a comforting dessert on a chilly evening, this crisp is a simple, easy dessert to make.
The cranberries add a festive pop of color and tartness that is perfect with the sweet apples and crisp oat topping. Serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the perfect finishing touch.
Ingredients
Filling
- 7-8 apples, medium-sized, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 10 cups)
- 3 cups cranberries
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
How To Make Apple Cranberry Crisp
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13 baking dish and set it aside.
In a large mixing bowl, add the sliced apples, cranberries, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of ginger. Stir until the apples are well coated in sugar and spices.
Then pour into your prepared baking dish and spread the filling out evenly.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add the rolled oats, flour, 1 cup of brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and stir until well combined.
Add the melted butter and stir until the mixture is crumbly.
Next, sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
How To Store And Reheat
Refrigerator: Let the crisp cool completely, then cover the dish tightly with foil or plastic wrap. If you need the baking dish for something else, you can also transfer leftovers to another container. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Freezer: You can also freeze the baked crisp. Once it’s fully cooled, store it in a freezer-safe container and wrap the dish well in foil. It will freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight before reheating.
How To Freeze Unbaked Apple Cranberry Crisp
You can freeze both the baked and unbaked crisps. My favorite way to do it is to freeze unbaked crisps. Simply prepare the apple filling and topping, then layer them in your freezer-safe, oven-safe container. Then cover well with foil.
Write the date and cooking instructions on the foil and place it in your freezer.
To cook from frozen, simply remove it from the freezer, remove the foil and plastic wrap (if used), and place the foil back on loosely.
Bake, covered, at 350°F for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
Topping Ideas
- Ice Cream – Vanilla or pumpkin ice cream would go great with this dessert.
- Whipped Cream – A classic pairing with homemade crisps.
- Maple Syrup – Real maple syrup is a great drizzle over the top to sweeten up the flavors.
