Easy Child’s Crochet Hat

With the cold weather here, all the little ones have requested new hats! So I’ve been whipping up some of my quick and easy kids crochet hats.

This pattern fits my 9 and 7-year-old great, and even my 5-year-old can wear it with the brim rolled up a bit more. By crocheting in the back loops of each stitch, it makes a simple but pretty pattern.

For a custom fit, measure your child’s head and make your crochet chain 2 inches shorter. For a younger child, reduce height from 12 inches to 8 inches.

Stitch notes:  DC = double crochet, BLO = back loops only

Easy Child’s Crochet Hat

• Bulky weight yarn
• Size 6 mm crochet hook
• Gauge 3 dc’s per inch

Chain 44

Row 1. DC in the 3rd chain from the hook and in each chain across. After the last stitch, chain 3, turn.

Row 2. DC in the BLO in each stitch across. After the last stitch, chain 3, turn.

Repeat row 2 until the hat is 11 to 12 inches high.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and draw it through the loop to secure. Fold the hat over, lining up the pattern, and sew the seam together. I use a blanket stitch, but a whip stitch works well too.

Weave the remaining yarn through the top edge and pull to gather together. Sew a knot to secure and weave the yarn ends in. Turn right side out and roll up the brim to the desired height.
