This creamy coleslaw recipe is one of those sides that always shows up on our table when we’re having a BBQ or a simple family dinner. It’s made with fresh cabbage, shredded carrots, and a simple homemade dressing that comes together in minutes.
It’s a great option when you need an easy coleslaw recipe for BBQs, family dinners, or potlucks. The creamy slaw has just the right balance of sweet and tangy, and it’s always a hit with both kids and adults.
Ingredients
- 1 medium cabbage (about 2 pounds, 8 cups shredded)
- 3 medium carrots, peeled and shredded
- 1 cup Miracle Whip (or mayonnaise)
- 4 tablespoons white sugar
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
How To Make Creamy Coleslaw
Start by removing the outer leaves from the cabbage, then cut it into quarters and remove the core. Slice the cabbage into thin shreds, or use a food processor to save time. Place the shredded cabbage into a large bowl.
Peel and shred the carrots, then add them to the cabbage.
Toss everything together so it’s evenly mixed.
In a separate bowl, add the Miracle Whip, sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, black pepper, salt, and celery seed.
Whisk together until the dressing is smooth, and everything is well combined. Taste and adjust if needed.
Pour the dressing over the cabbage and carrots, then mix well until everything is coated.
You can serve it right away, or cover and refrigerate it for a while to let the flavors come together before serving.
Substitutions:
- Miracle Whip – You can use mayo instead if you prefer it. But mayo is less sweet than whipped dressing, so you might want to adjust the sugar to taste.
- Vinegar – I used normal white vinegar, but apple cider vinegar works well too.
